The Heisman Trophy Winner is….

Dec 11th, 2009 | By Dan | Category: Featured Story, NCAA

The Heisman trophy will be awarded tomorrow night at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City. Downtown Athletic Club..wouldn’t that be a great name for a sports bar..or even a strip club? Anyhow this is the 75th presentation of the trophy and it could go several ways. There is always regional bias in the Heisman voting just like in the polls, I a have a feeling that might play a role in who wins it.

Suh's best Heisman pose.

Suh's best Heisman pose.

The Heisman is supposed to be given to the most outstanding player in college football. Sometimes that is the case..sometimes its not. I guess there is a reason the statue has a ball in his hand and that is why the Heisman usually goes to an offensive skills player, but doesn’t necessarily have to. Suh, a defensive lineman from Nebraska, is a finalist this year and more than likely will be the first pick in the draft. The other four finalists are, Ingram, a running back from Alabama, McCoy, a quarterback from Texas, Tebow, a quarterback from Florida and Gerhart, a running back from Stanford.

Who will win?

1. Colt McCoy has a 70 percent completion rate, 3,512 yards, 27 TDs, 12 INTs; 348 yards rushing with 3 TDs. I think the regional bios will split votes between Tebow and Ingram in the South and SEC and McCoy was a finalist last year. He has guided Texas to an undefeated season, struggling against Nebraska’s defense in the Big 12 championship.

2. Mark Ingram carried Alabama on offense with 249 carries and 1,542 yards, 15 TDs and 30 catches for 322 yards on an undefeated team.

3. Toby Gerhart had 311 carries for 1,736 yards, 26 TDs and 1 TD pass and 10 catches for 149 yards. Hes a senior, but the lack of national exposure will hurt him along with the four losses Stanford suffered.

4. Tim Tebow, Florida’s leader and savior had a 65 percent completion rating with 2,413 yards, 18 TDs, 5 INTs; 203 rushes, for 859 yards, 13 TDs. I think the loss to Alabama hurts him a lot in voting as well as the vote splitting of SEC votes.

5. Ndamukong Suh, the beast, had 82 tackles, 23 for loss, 12 sacks, 1 INT and 10 pass breakups playing defensive tackle. He might not finish this low, but he won’t win because of not only being a defensive player, but a defensive tackle.

Who I think should win?

1. Toby Gerhart. Hes the reason Stanford finished where they did in the Pac-10. No one has gained more yards than he has and he has more touchdowns than any back. I love his running style and look for him to do great things in the NFL.

2. Ndamukong Suh. I had a hard time not giving him the trophy. He is a beast and a dominating presence on the defensive line. He was amazing against Texas and the main reason Nebraska has a chance at beating Texas. He will be the number one draft pick in the draft.

3. Colt McCoy.Hes the reason Texas is undefeated. Sure they have the defense and the coaching, but Colt McCoy is why they are where they are.

4. Mark Ingram. Hes a sophomore and the reason Alabama is undefeated is because of the defense. Ingram had a great game against Florida, but hes not colleges best player.

5. Tim Tebow. The former Heisman winner is a great athlete, but the other four are better, at least this year. Unlike some of the others. I don’t see Tebow being a good NFL player..at least a quarterback.
