A new world record might have fallen Monday when Wayne Schumacher of Wisconsin shot a 30 point buck. Schumacher shot the buck at 15 yards with his bow at 6:45 Monday evening(September 20th) in Fond Du Lac county, Wisconsin. The 30 point buck had an inside antler spread of 20 1/2 inches and was a big northern Wisconsin buck weighing in, field dressed, at 225 pounds. Now that is a big buck…body wise and antler wise.

New record?

I can’t wait to hear more on how Wayne took this buck as well as the scouting that led up to his tree stand placement, etc. This makes me even more excited for Pennsylvania season to start in two weeks and West Virginia season in three.

Is a crossbow a bow and should it be used to hunt in archery season? That is a question a lot of states are asking and seems Pennsylvania has made up its mind dispute opposition from bowhunters. Last October Pennsylvania legalized the use of crossbows for archery season irritating some bowhunters including myself. It is now legal to hunt with a crossbow in Pennsylvania and in archery season at that.

Real bow or not?

I’m of the opinion that a crossbow, while having the word bow in the name, is not a bow. You hold it like a gun, you pull a trigger like a gun..therefore its closer to a gun than a bow. You don’t draw like a bow, it doesn’t even have arrows, but bolts. Now I can understand if someone that is handicapped wants to use a crossbow, but not in archery season. Which begs why use one at all. In West Virginia it is only legal to use a crossbow if you have a permit, filled out an application and had it approved by your doctor. Which is the way he should be in my opinion. If your not able to pull back a traditional or compound bow..then DON’T BOWHUNT. If you want to hunt in gun season with a crossbow that is fine, but don’t be defining a crossbow as a bow as Pennsylvania it seems wants to do.
